Catastrofe e Meraviglia

La Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in dialogo con l’arte contemporanea, per guardare oltre le paure

Che cosa spaventa davvero chi ha il compito di custodire la memoria dell’umanità? Per un bibliotecario, ciò che per chiunque è la normalità — un acquazzone estivo, il volo di un piccolo insetto, un tratto di penna o una piccola slabbratura — costituisce un potenziale campanello d’allarme.

Da questa consapevolezza nasce “Catastrofe e Meraviglia”, uno straordinario ciclo espositivo quinquennale ideato dalla Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Ispirandosi al trattato del 1756 di Gaetano Volpi, Del furore d’aver libri — spietata e sarcastica radiografia delle manie del bibliofilo —, la Biblioteca sceglie di affrontare a viso aperto le proprie paure più grandi.

Un viaggio in cinque tappe attraverso gli elementi e le minacce naturali che da sempre insidiano il patrimonio librario:

1. L’Acqua
2. La Luce e l’Aria
3. Il Fuoco
4. Gli insetti e i microrganismi
5. L’Uomo

“Catastrofe e meraviglia” non è solo un percorso per addetti ai lavori, ma un’indagine profonda sul rapporto tra l’essere umano e il Creato. Superando l’istinto del panico e della fuga, la mostra invita il pubblico a una perlustrazione pacata e serena, dimostrando come al di là della minaccia della perdita, possano aprirsi orizzonti di lettura inattesi, opportunità di restauro e nuove forme di creazione artistica.

What truly frightens those whose job it is to preserve humanity’s memory? For a librarian, what is normal for everyone else—a summer downpour, the flight of a small insect, a stroke of the pen, or a small tear—is a potential warning sign.

From this awareness springs “Catastrophe and Wonder”, an extraordinary five-year exhibition series conceived by the Vatican Apostolic Library. Drawing inspiration from Gaetano Volpi’s 1756 treatise, Del furore d’aver libri — a ruthless and sarcastic dissection of the bibliophile’s obsessions —, the Library has chosen to confront its greatest fears head-on.

A five-stage journey through the natural elements and threats that have always endangered the heritage of books:

1. Water
2. Light and Air
3. Fire
4. Insects and Microorganisms
5. Man

“Catastrophe and Wonder” is not merely an exhibition for experts, but a profound exploration of the relationship between human beings and Creation. Overcoming the instinct to panic and flee, the exhibition invites the public on a calm and serene exploration, demonstrating how, beyond the threat of loss, unexpected horizons of reading, opportunities for restoration, and new forms of artistic creation can emerge.
